Support Navy Chief Petty Officer Melissa Haskins

Melissa Haskins has formed a team for the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society San Diego Chapter’s 13th Annual Light the Night Walk and has already recruited 20 Navy colleagues.

This year, the Walk is scheduled for November 4, a day after her birthday. What’s the only present she’s asking for? To get members from her community and individuals in the Navy to join her team or donate as she celebrates her birthday and continues to fight through chemotherapy.

The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, the world’s largest voluntary health agency dedicated to blood cancer, will host its 13th Annual Light The Night® Walk on Friday, November 4 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds.

The Light The Night® Walk is an inspirational two-mile walk that brings together thousands of individuals to raise funds for lifesaving blood cancer research and critical patient and family services.

“More than 957,000 Americans are battling leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma and it’s our goal to raise money to help those individuals live better, longer lives. The Walk is our opportunity to do just that and pay tribute and commemorate lives touched by cancer,” said Kristin Sacco, Deputy Executive Director of the San Diego/Hawaii Chapter. “This event is an experience unlike any other and truly brings light to the dark world of cancer. I guarantee that everyone participating in the Walk will be touched in some way.”

Walkers will join together in twilight holding illuminated balloons – white for survivors, red for supporters and gold to remember those lost to cancer. In addition to the Walk, the evening’s festivities will include music, food and family activities.

“In 2010, we raised more than $420,000 and nearly 4,000 walkers participated in the event. This year, we’re looking to attract more walkers and we encourage the public to join a team, form a team or just come out and walk with us,” said Sacco.

Check-In is at 6:00 p.m. with the opening ceremony beginning at 7:00 p.m. and the Walk starting at 7:30 p.m. For more information on this year’s event, visit http://www.lightthenight.org/sd/.

The San Diego event gold sponsor is the Metzger Law Group and other national sponsors include Celgene Corporation, Cephalon Oncology, Genentech/Biogen IDEC, Millennium: The Takeda Oncology Company, Pfizer, Burlington Coat Factory, Carter’s, Elbit Systems of America, OneSource Distributors, Beta Engineering California LP, and UCSD/Sharp Bone Marrow Transplant Program.
